Rocky Mountain High Experience® is Theatre of the Rockies’ current touring production, featuring Rick Schuler’s tribute to the music of John Denver. Its John Denver Christmas performances are scheduled for five Hawaiʻi communities, December 26–30, 2026. The production puts our mission into action by bringing this musical legacy to audiences through live performance.

BIOGRAPHY
John Denver (1943–1997) created music that brought people closer to nature, home, and one another. Born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., he began playing guitar as a boy and later performed with the Mitchell Trio before establishing a solo career. Songs including “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Rocky Mountain High,” “Annie’s Song,” and “Sunshine on My Shoulders” became enduring favorites.
Denver’s work reached beyond the concert stage. He spoke out for environmental protection and supported humanitarian causes, bringing themes of compassion and connection into both his music and public life. His songs continue to resonate with listeners who grew up with them and with younger audiences hearing them for the first time.
Theatre of the Rockies celebrates that legacy through Rocky Mountain High Experience®, a live tribute starring Rick Schuler. Our current John Denver Christmas production brings the music to five Hawaiʻi communities in December 2026, creating an opportunity for audiences to share these songs together.

A Colorado name: Born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., he chose his stage name from Colorado’s capital city.
A songwriter heard everywhere: Peter, Paul and Mary recorded his “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” which became their only No. 1 hit.
Music across borders: Denver performed in the Soviet Union in the 1980s, using music to encourage understanding between people.
A lasting Colorado legacy: “Rocky Mountain High” became one of Colorado’s official state songs in 2007.
